About Us

Shillong Polytechnic is a premier government technical institute in the state of Meghalaya, in North East India. Situated in the outskirts of the city of Shillong and flanked by gentle rolling hills on the north side, it is an ideal location for higher educational pursuits. The location of the North Eastern Hill University about a kilometer away gives an added academic atmosphere to the site. Shillong Polytechnic was established in October, 1965 under the composite State of Assam. Initially the institute functioned from the Tribal Research Institute at Mawlai, Gaushala using its office rooms as classrooms and laboratories and a temporary shed for workshop practices. The only course offered at that time was civil engineering and the annual intake of students was 60. In 1968 due to a fire that destroyed the Tribal Research Institute, Shillong Polytechnic was shifted to rented rooms and eventually to its present site. After the bifurcation of Assam in 1972 the institute came under the administrative control of the Government of Meghalaya. Its academic control however remained under the State Council for Technical Education Assam till 1993 when the Meghalaya State Council for Technical Education (MSCTE) was formed. Shillong Polytechnic is continuously striving to keep abreast of the latest technological developments with an aim for capacity expansion, quality enhancement and overall improvement of the efficiency of the institution.
